Skater GirlMy artwork depicts a young woman, effortlessly skateboarding in her hijab as she glides through a futuristic vision of Vancouver's Hogan's Alley, which was an important Black neighborhood that was destroyed around 1970 to construct viaducts for a freeway that was never built. It serves as a reminder of the systemic oppression faced by Black and indigenous communities.For me, visual art permits us to imagine alternate realities. If done right, it can inspire the viewer to escape their own perception of the world. I believe that the capacity for imagination and shifting paradigms is a cornerstone in the advances of civilization. That’s why in my work, I center on black liberation, black beauty, and black joy.
